On Saturday, we discussed the Sotah ritual that was used when a husband was jealous or thought his wife had been unfaithful. We discussed the implications it had for women in the male-dominated society of the Torah and whether the mixture the woman had to drink was harmless or not. We also discussed the impact of the ritual on both the husband and the wife – did it show the husband to be foolish? Did it embarrass the wife? And was it fair? We considered whether this was a commentary on the relationships between God and Israel when Israel goes astray. Here is a link to the source sheet.
